My Two Dads

Growing up I was lucky. I had a step-father, and a biological father — both of whom were my Dad. It’s funny. Both were named Jim, they had blue eyes, and each served in the Navy. I guess my mum had a certain type.

My bio-dad and mum divorced when I was two. But he stayed in my life as a weekend and Holiday dad. When I was twelve my mum remarried, and it was then that I realized how lucky I really was. Some of my friends didn’t even have one dad — yet, I had two.

Yes, I had two terrific dads growing up. I was blessed. Twice the family. Twice the love. Twice — everything.

One of my dads is now gone from this earth, but not from my heart. And like all children who lose a parent, it was difficult. No — more than difficult, it was painful when he died.

But I’m fortunate to have another dad that I can still spend time with, joke and talk with, hold, and most importantly — love. One day, and sooner than it should be, this dad will leave me too. My heart already aches in fear of that day.

And when it finally comes, and my remaining dad is gone — it will be twice that I have lost a dad, twice the grief, and twice the pain. But even with facing that heartache for a second time, I’m so thankful to have had two wonderful and loving dads in my life — I truly am.

I love you both.
